Focused Rigidity Casting (FRC) Practical Guide Chapter – now available

As its name states this technique immobilises a fracture at the fracture site whilst offering greater flexibility at either end of the cast.  The treatment objective is to maintain maximum functionality of the affected body part whilst maintaining appropriate immobilisation of the fracture site.

Early return to function is known to help avoid muscle atrophy and improve circulation. Patients in clinical studies on FRC have shown better functional and satisfaction scores after treatment compared to a control group (click here for further reading).  Additionally, the ability to construct removable casts can result in FRC casts reducing overall treatment costs because casts can be re-applied after examination.  In the right circumstances patients could also be encouraged to self-manage removal – treatment and compliance permitting.

The benefits of FRC:

  • Better functional scores for patients after treatment
  • Cost savings compared to standard treatment (one cast for the whole treatment)
  • Higher patient satisfaction

Delta-Cast® Conformable remains the only casting tape clinically proven for use with FRC*.  The polyester cast tape provides rigid and semi-rigid casting options for primary and secondary casting where patient fit, comfort and compliance are critical.
